2021 Summer Teacher Tours
The Minnesota Agriculture in the Classroom Program (MAITC) is excited to offer a unique summer professional development opportunity for K-12 educators. Our Summer Teacher Tours allow educators to observe and experience current agricultural production, processing and distribution techniques, as well as exposure to a wealth of standards-based, agriculture themed lesson plans and resources. Participants will network and share how they intend to use these experiences and resources to integrate agriculture into their curricula to improve student achievement by applying authentic agricultural examples to teach core curriculum concepts in science, social studies, language arts, math and nutrition.
Our Regional Curriculum Specialists have joined forces to bring you our 2021 Ag-spiration Summer Teacher Tours!
- Four virtual tours to choose from. Sign-up for one or all four!
- Interact with farmers and agriculture experts in real time
- MAITC staff will lead hands-on activities and discussions in breakout rooms with similar educators
- All participants will be sent a resource package with lesson plans and supplies to try at home
- Register by June 1st to receive resource package
Wheat! From the Field to the ForkDid you know that in the United States, there are six main classes of wheat? Wheat classes are determined by the time of year they are planted and harvested, the shape and hardness of the kernel, and the color of the bran. This virtual tour explores this amazing grain! You will:
- Meet a wheat farmer to see how wheat is grown.
- Visit the Northern Crop Institute to discover unique careers related to product development and see how pasta is made!
- Pop into Minneapolis bakery, Bakers Field Flour and Bread, to see a stone mill in action grinding wheat grown in Minnesota
- Later in the evening (5:30 p.m.) professional chef Joel Gamoran and a Minnesota farmer will lead us in a virtual cooking class where we will make a delicious pasta dinner to enjoy at home!
Agriculture: Local to GlobalAre agricultural products grown in Minnesota exported all over the world? Do Minnesota farmers provide food for our state's citizens? The answer to both these questions is yes! This tour investigates both local and global agricultural systems.
- Explore a soybean farm where different production practices (conventional and organic soybean) and varieties (food grade and commodity) are utilized
- Visit the Northern Crops Institute to see the process of making tofu and soymilk
- Experts will share details on the global markets for soybeans and their importance to Minnesota's economy
- Experience Minnesota's local flavor by exploring Featherstone Farm near Rushford, MN. Follow produce from Featherstone Farm to local co-ops and homes
- Breakout sessions will be focused on a variety of geography themed topics. This tour is funded by National Geographic Foundation
'Sota Grown Food PodCan you grow food in a shipping container? The answer is yes! This tour investigates the collaboration of Todd-Wadena Electric Cooperative, Great River Energy, Central Lakes College-Staples, Electric Power Research Institute and Lakewood Health System to support an indoor hydroponic container farm project known as 'Sota Grown.
- Witness the technology that allows the 'Sota Grown Food Pod to supply fresh, nutritious food, year-round
- Investigate hydroponic production and it's benefits and challenges
- Discuss related curricular tools and resources to incorporate into your classroom and curricula
Soil Fuels SuccessWhat resource is at the heart of almost all agricultural production? Soil! This virtual tour focuses on how soil fuels success on a Minnesota crop farm.
- Dig-in to soil components and their value
- Explore the evolution of conservation tillage on the Ponwith Family Farm, near Cleveland, MN
- Investigate the environmental benefits of conservation tillage practices and what all of these things mean in the big picture for the agriculture industry and our world
